Kiwis beat Bangladesh in first Test: Here're records broken
Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat against New Zealand in the first Test match in Hamilton. The Tigers lost by an innings and 52 runs despite a much improved batting performance in the second innings. Trent Boult picked up a five-for to help the Kiwis overpower the visitors. Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar hit tons, but that wasn't enough. Here are the records broken.
How did the match pan out?
Bangladesh managed 234 in the first innings despite a superb ton by Tamim Iqbal. Neil Wagner took a five-for to rattle the visitors. In reply, the Kiwis hit a record 715/6. Three batsmen hit tons with skipper Kane Williamson smashing 200*. Bangladesh fought hard with Tamim (74), Soumya (149) and Mahmudullah (146), but they were folded for 429. Boult (5/123) was the chief architect.
Soumya and Mahmudullah script new feats
Bangladesh saw Soumya and Mahmudullah put on a defiant 235-run fifth-wicket stand. This was the third highest fifth-wicket partnership by Bangladesh in Tests. It was also their second highest feat against New Zealand. Soumya notched his maiden Test ton. Mahmudullah scripted his fourth career Test ton. It was also his highest score in Test cricket. He also went past 2,500 Test runs (2,575).
Tamim Iqbal scores maiden ton against New Zealand
Tamim Iqbal (126 and 74) played two substantial innings in this Test match. He notched his seventh career fifty and a maiden ton against NZ in Test cricket. He now has 830 runs against the Black Caps.
NZ script 700-plus runs for the first time
New Zealand went past the 700-run mark for the very first time in Test cricket. Their previous highest was 690 versus Pakistan in 2014. Their 715/6 is also the 17th highest innings total by a team in Tests. New Zealand's previous highest Test score against Bangladesh was 553/7 in 2010. Three Kiwi batsmen notched centuries in their record innings score.
Williamson achieves a host of records against Bangladesh
Williamson (200*) also notched his maiden double ton and a highest Test score versus Bangladesh. This was also his third career Test ton against the Asian side. He became only the second Kiwi to hit a double century against the Tigers after Stephen Fleming. Williamson is also the highest Test run-scorer for the Kiwis against Bangladesh (609).
Williamson first Kiwi batsman to smash 20 career Test tons
Williamson notched his 20th career Test ton and became the first Kiwi batsman to do so in the history of the game. The right-handed batsman also surpassed the 6,000-run mark in Test cricket in just his 71st match. He also went past Sir Richie Richardson (5,949 runs) with this special feat. Williamson also became the fourth Kiwi batsman to get past 6,000 Test runs.
Boult gets to 239 Test scalps
Boult picked up his eighth five-for in Test cricket. He now has 239 Test scalps to his name. Boult needs four scalps to get past former India spinner B Chandrasekhar (242 Test wickets). He now has 21 wickets against Bangladesh. Neil Wagner now has 169 Test scalps. He ended with seven wickets in the match and now has 24 career scalps against the Tigers.
