NZC awards central contracts to Nathan Smith, Josh Clarkson
Nathan Smith and Josh Clarkson have been awarded central contracts by New Zealand Cricket (NZC). The duo will fill the positions left vacant by Devon Conway and Finn Allen. Both Conway and Allen declined their contract offers last month to participate in franchise leagues around the globe. The 27-year-old Clarkson is a middle-order batter who also bowls medium-pace, while the 26-year-old Smith is a seam-bowling all-rounder who is yet to make his international debut.
Clarkson's international cricket journey
Clarkson has represented the Black Caps in three ODIs in 2023 and six T20Is this year. On the other hand, Smith is yet to make his debut on the international stage. Despite this, he has made significant strides in domestic cricket, becoming the highest wicket-taker in last season's Plunket Shield with 33 wickets at an average of 17.18. His performances were instrumental in leading Wellington to victory.
Smith's impressive stint with Worcestershire
Smith also had a successful stint with Worcestershire this season, taking 27 wickets at 21.14 in seven County Championship matches. He contributed three half-centuries and took eight wickets in nine T20 Blast games before a hamstring injury prematurely ended his time in England. NZC head coach Gary Stead praised Smith's domestic cricket performance, particularly his red-ball cricket skills, stating that he believes Smith has the potential to succeed at the international level when given an opportunity.
Clarkson's contribution to NZC and future prospects
Clarkson was part of the series against Bangladesh, Australia, and Pakistan last season. Stead believes that his inclusion will provide depth to the squad, especially considering NZ's busy white-ball schedule. "Josh has been involved in both white ball squads over the past 12 months which shows the strides he's made in his game," Stead stated. He further praised Clarkson as a hard-hitting player with plenty of skills who can offer a lot with bat and ball on the international stage.
Conway and Allen's future with NZC
The contract list had vacancies after Conway and Allen chose to pursue T20 league deals in January. Conway, who will play for Joburg Super Kings in the SA20, was offered a casual playing contract similar to Kane Williamson. However, Allen signed a two-year agreement with Perth Scorchers in the BBL and wasn't given the same option but will remain eligible for selection on a case-by-case basis.
