Mexican Open: Nadal, Medvedev reach the quarter-finals
2022 Australian Open winner Rafael Nadal has registered the best start to his career. The Spaniard has booked a quarters berth in the ongoing Mexican Open. The veteran star extended his unbeaten run to 12 matches this year with a 6-0, 6-3 win over American Kozlov. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev beat Spain's Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-2 to advance. Here are the details.
Nadal to face Tommy Paul next
As per BBC, Nadal's previous best start to a season came in 2014. He had registered 11 successive wins before losing to Stan Wawrinka in the Australian Open final. The Spaniard will play Tommy Paul for a place in the Acapulco semi-finals. The 35-year-old Nadal could then meet Medvedev, who he beat in a five-set thriller at the 2022 AO.
Nadal is aiming a third title; Medvedev aims top spot
Nadal started 2022 by winning the Melbourne Summer Set and the Australian Open. He is seeking his third tour-level trophy this year and the 91st of his legendary career. Meanwhile, Medvedev will take on Yoshihito Nishioka next. He is set to displace Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP Rankings if he wins the title in Mexico.
I'll try to be ready for tomorrow, says Nadal
"It's always important to win as quick as possible but the most important thing is to win," Nadal said. "Tonight has been straight sets - that's great news, and I'll try to be ready for tomorrow against a tough opponent," he added.
Wins for Norrie and Tsitsipas
British number one Cameron Norrie overcame American John Isner 6-7, (2-7), 6-3, 6-4. World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas sealed a 47-minute duel, winning 6-1, 6-0 against American qualifier JJ Wolf. Tsitsipas will play American Marcos Giron next, while Norrie takes on Germany's Peter Gojowczyk.
