A look at IPL innings with most sixes
Days after recording the highest IPL score, Sunrisers Hyderabad broke their record after smashing a mammoth 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 20 overs. Travis Head's blistering ton and contributions from Heinrich Klaasen, Abdul Samad, and Aiden Markram helped SRH enter the record books. SRH batters smacked 22 sixes, now the most in a T20 innings. Here are the IPL innings with most sixes.
22 sixes: SRH vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2024
As mentioned, 2024 RCB-SRH encounter in Bengaluru has now recorded the most sixes in an IPL innings. SRH, who were put in to bat, slammed a mammoth 287/3. Their innings comprised as many as 22 sixes. Centurion Head smashed eight of them, while Klaasen hammered seven. Abhishek Sharma, Samad, and Markram shared the rest of the seven maximums.
21 sixes: RCB vs PWI, Bengaluru, 2013
Interestingly, RCB held the previous record for hitting the most sixes in an IPL innings. The record-breaking innings came on the same ground back in 2013. Chris Gayle's record-breaking 175*(66) guided the Royal Challengers to 263/5 against the now-defunct Pune Warriors India. That particular innings recorded a total of 21 sixes, with Gayle alone smacking 17.
20 sixes: RCB vs GL, Bengaluru, 2016
Three years later, RCB came close to surpassing their 20-six mark, once again at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. They racked up 248/3 against Gujarat Lions, riding on a 229-run stand between Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Both Kohli and de Villiers brought up their tons. They had 20 sixes between them, with the South African batter smacking 12.
20 sixes: DC vs GL, Delhi, 2017
The IPL 2017 encounter between Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and the now-defunct Gujarat Lions also recorded plenty of sixes. The Suresh Raina-led Lions set a target of 209 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. DC stunned the Lions by chasing it down in 17.3. A young Rishabh Pant smashed a 43-ball 97. DC slammed 20 sixes in the run-chase.
MI also attained this feat in IPL 2024
Earlier in the ongoing IPL season, Mumbai Indians also smashed 20 sixes against SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. SRH scored 18 maximums, taking the match tally to 38.
