Batters with most runs in an IPL season
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were knocked out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season after Rajasthan Royals defeated them in the Eliminator. The Royal Challengers couldn't defend 172 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Virat Kohli, also the current Orange Cap holder, finished as their highest run-scorer with 741 runs. These are the fifth-highest runs in an IPL season. Here are the stats.
Virat Kohli: 973 runs, 2016
Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in an IPL season. The Indian batter hammered a ground-breaking 973 runs in IPL 2016. He averaged an astronomical 81.08 (four tons and seven fifties). Interestingly, no other batter has scored 900 or more runs in an IPL season. Kohli led RCB to the final that year as they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Shubman Gill: 890 runs, 2023
Indian batter Shubman Gill grew from strength to strength in the 2023 season. He became only the second batter after Kohli to complete 800 runs in an IPL season. Overall, Gill smacked 890 runs from 17 matches for Gujarat Titans, who finished as the runners-up. The GT opener smacked three tons and maintained a strike-rate of 157.80.
Jos Buttler: 863 runs, 2022
Rajasthan Royals' Jos Buttler has the record for scoring the most runs by an overseas batter in an IPL season. He slammed 863 runs from 17 matches for RR in 2022 as they reached their second-ever IPL final. During the season, Buttler equaled Kohli's record for scoring four tons in a season. The former also tallied four half-centuries.
David Warner: 848 runs, 2016
David Warner remains the only other batter to have scored over 800 runs in an IPL season. Despite scoring a staggering 848 runs, Warner finished as the second-highest run-scorer in 2016 as Kohli's 973 runs trumped him. However, Warner led SRH to their maiden IPL title that year as they beat RCB in a high-octane final.
