Morkel explains process behind Rana's selection as concussion substitute
What's the story
Team India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has shed light on the decision-making process that led to Harshit Rana replacing Shivam Dube in the fourth T20I against England.
The move was necessitated after Dube was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Jamie Overton and experienced mild headache symptoms during the innings break.
This unexpected incident prompted India to select Rana as a concussion substitute for Dube.
Notably, this substitution saw Rana make his T20I debut for India.
Selection debate
Rana's selection as substitute sparks controversy
The controversial decision to pick fast bowler Rana as a replacement for all-rounder Dube, drew flak from many former English cricketers.
"When the decision was made, Harshit was having dinner. So we had to get him ready as quickly as possible," Morkel said during the post-match presentation.
He further added, "We took a name forward to the match referee in terms of a suitable substitution, and from there it is up to the match referee to make the decision."
Match impact
Rana's performance and Morkel's stance on substitution decision
Despite the controversy over his selection, Rana made a mark in his T20I debut. He took his maiden wicket by dismissing Liam Livingstone in the 12th over of the innings.
Meanwhile, responding to the criticism, Morkel stressed the final say on substitutions rests with match referee Javagal Srinath.
"It goes to the powers above me - match referee makes the decision," he clarified. Notably, Rana finished the game with figures worth 3/33.
Player perspective
Rana's reaction to his unexpected debut
