Shami prioritizes fitness over international return post ankle surgery
Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has expressed his commitment to achieving full fitness following his ankle surgery, even if it means delaying his return to international cricket. His last appearance was in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, after which he was sidelined due to an injury that required surgical intervention. Shami shared these thoughts during the Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) annual awards ceremony where he was honored for his exceptional performances.
Shami's focus on fitness and cautious return
Shami emphasized his determination to be fully fit before making a comeback. He stated, "I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time." He added that he doesn't want to rush back into the game and risk another injury. Despite starting bowling again, he won't take any chances until he is completely fit.
Shami's potential return through domestic cricket
Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation and may return to competitive cricket with his domestic team, Bengal, in the Ranji Trophy. This could potentially lead to an international appearance later in one of the Test matches against New Zealand. He hinted at playing domestic matches before his international return, stating "If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will."
Shami's confidence in India's performance against Australia
Shami is tipped to play a crucial role in India's preparations for the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. When asked about the much-anticipated series, he confidently stated, "We are the favorites, they should be worried." This statement reflects his high spirits and belief in the team's capabilities despite his ongoing recovery from injury.
Shami's gratitude toward Bengal and fellow awardees
At the CAB awards ceremony, Shami expressed his gratitude for Bengal's support throughout his career. He said, "I often say I was born in UP but made in Bengal. This is a journey of over 20 years, and I am grateful for the love and support Bengal has shown me." The event also recognized other accomplished cricketers including Anustup Majumdar, Abishek Porel, Suraj Singh Jaiswal, and Chandrahas Dash among others.
