Will Mohammed Shami equal Mitchell Starc's record in ODIs?
What's the story
Mohammed Shami is on the verge of creating cricket history in the upcoming ODI series against England at home.
The opener of the three-match series will be played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur, on Thursday, February 6.
Shami, who has taken 195 wickets in his 101-match ODI career, needs just five more to equal Australian pacer Mitchell Starc's world record.
Record
Shami's incredible record in ODIs
Shami has been India's match-winner with the ball in ODI cricket. His impeccable seam movement with raw pace have bolstered Team India.
The Indian pacer, in a career spanning over a decade, has taken 195 wickets from 101 ODIs at an average of 23.68. His tally includes 5 fifers and 10 four-wicket hauls.
Notably, Starc is currently the fastest to 200 ODI wickets (102 matches). He could be emulated by Shami in the Nagpur ODI.
Information
Two other bowlers with this feat
As per ESPNcricinfo, only two bowlers other than Starc have taken 200 ODI wickets in less than 110 matches. Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq (104 matches) and New Zealand's Trent Boult (107 matches) join Starc on this elite list.
Historic achievement
Shami to become eighth Indian with this feat
Only seven bowlers have taken more than 200 wickets for India in ODI history.
If Shami manages to take five wickets in the impending series, he will be the eighth Indian to join this elite list.
Anil Kumble, one of the greatest spinners across formats, has taken the most wickets for India in ODI cricket (334).
Role
Shami set to lead India's pace attack
With Jasprit Bumrah missing out, Shami will lead India's pace attack in the ODI series against England.
It will be the latter's first 50-over match for India since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia.
Shami, who was earlier out with injury, made a comeback in the recently-concluded T20I series against England. He took three wickets in the 5th T20I.
