A look at minutes from ICC's meeting on October 14
The International Cricket Council (ICC) held its board meeting in Dubai on Monday as a number of issues came into limelight, besides some historic decisions being taken. Issues like the membership status of Zimbabwe and Nepal, along with future ICC events and prize money for the global tournaments were discussed. On the same note, we take a look at the minutes of the meeting.
Nepal and Zimbabwe readmitted as ICC Members
Nepal and Zimbabwe have been reinstated as ICC members following their suspension in 2016 and 2019, respectively, after government interference in board activities. Consequently, both the teams are now eligible to participate in ICC events, while Zimbabwe would look to compete in the ICC Men's U19 World Cup and ICC Super League, both in 2020. However, Nepal's readmission is on a conditional basis.
Prize money of ICC Women's event increased
The ICC also came up with a landmark decision to increase the prize money in women's cricket during the ICC events. With a total increase of $2.6 million, the winners and runners-up are scheduled to get $1 million and $500,000, respectively, during ICC World T20, which is a 320% increase from now. During the World Cup, the prize pot would increase to $3.5 million.
ICC to host a global event every year
ICC also decided that during its next eight-year cycle, starting in 2023, both men and women would be playing a global event every year. From 2023, eight men's and eight women's events, along with four U19 Men's and four U19 Women's events, are scheduled to take place. The ICC has urged members to express interest to host these events as bidding starts from 2020.
Multiple Super Overs to decide a winner
Following the controversial boundary count rule, which saw England winning the ICC Men's World Cup 2019, there were suggestions put forward to do away with the rule. Therefore, the Chief Executives' Committee has decided that during the knockouts, the Super Over would continue in case of a tied Super Over. Also, if the Super Over is tied during league matches, the match remains tied.
Other decisions taken by the ICC
Among the other decisions, the ICC decided to hike the funding allocation for Associate Members by 12%, to $30.5 million, from 2020. Meanwhile, Indra Nooyi was unanimously reappointed as ICC's Independent Director until 2022.
