#GamingBytes: Minecraft beats Fortnite in terms of popularity
Fortnite, by Epic Games, has become a cultural phenomenon worldwide, drawing 80 million players monthly. While this is a staggering number of Battle Royale enthusiasts, the popularity of Fortnite has been bested by a long time classic game, Minecraft. Interestingly, the game has not lost its fanbase over the years and still manages to draw in 90 million active players every month.
The classic formula of success
Ever since Minecraft came out in 2009, it has remained a favorite among a certain community of gamers. This community is, however, in no way small. If the popularity of Fortnite made you swoon, Minecraft will blow your mind. Having sold 150+ million copies, it remains the second best selling game of all time. Notably, its popularity is eclipsed by Tetris, the puzzle video-game.
A loyal community makes a successful game
After Microsoft purchased Minecraft for $2.5 billion, it was expected that it might bring out a sequel. However, sequels tend to fracture communities, something Minecraft boss Helen Chiang deeply cares about. Thus, the company decided to keep updating the game instead of forcing players to switch to a new sequel. Furthermore, both the cross-platform play and spin-off, 'Minecraft: Dungeons' signal exciting times for gamers.
Sony's decision might become a boon for Minecraft
Except PS4 gamers, the Minecraft gaming community enjoys the cross-platform play. Till now, Sony has kept its users quarantined, which meant Minecraft fans on PS4 couldn't connect with others. However, the company's recent decision to open up cross-platform play with Fortnite, gives Minecraft fans hope.
