Vaughan backs Joe Root to break Tendulkar's Test runs record
Joe Root, England's star batter, is closing in on the legendary record of former Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar. With 145 Tests under his belt, Root has amassed 12,377 runs in the longest format of cricket. This leaves him just 3,544 runs short of Tendulkar's tally of most Test runs. The latter retired after playing 200 Tests with an impressive total of 15,921 runs to his name.
Root's exceptional form and Vaughan's prediction
Root, who is currently 33 years old, has been in exceptional form lately. His twin centuries against Sri Lanka at Lord's have brought him closer to Tendulkar's record. Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan expressed confidence that Root will surpass Tendulkar's record. "I think it's three and a half thousand runs he trails by. He has at least three years," Vaughan was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
Vaughan's take on Root's potential record-breaking feat
Vaughan further stated that Root, no longer burdened by captaincy duties, understands his game better than ever. He believes that even if Root surpasses Tendulkar, he will continue to play. "If Joe goes past Sachin, it will be the best thing that ever happens to cricket," Vaughan added. He also suggested that this could prompt the BCCI to strive for an Indian player at the top of the list.
Root's competition and Gilchrist's uncertainty
Among current cricketers, few can match Root and Tendulkar's records. Virat Kohli, with 113 Tests and 8,848 runs, is significantly behind both players. Vaughan believes it's only a matter of time before Root stands at the pinnacle of Test cricket. However, former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist expressed uncertainty about Root's future achievements until after next year's Ashes series.
