Miami Open: Medvedev, Tsitsipas advance; Swiatek continues red-hot form
Four-time ATP Masters 1000 winner Daniil Medvedev brushed past Spain's Pedro Martinez to reach the fourth round of the Miami Open. Medvedev enjoyed a 6-3, 6-4 win to progress further. Also, Stefanos Tsitsipas earned a crucial 6-4, 6-3 win over Alex de Minaur. In the women's section, Polish star Iga Swiatek earned her 14th straight win by beating Coco Gauff. Here's more.
Medvedev can reclaim his number one ranking
The 26-year-old Medvedev is set to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings that he lost two weeks ago. He is just two wins away from securing the same. As per ATP, Medvedev has won 12 of his 13 tour-level titles on hard courts and the win over Martinez was his 178th win on the surface since 2018.
I managed to win and I'm really happy: Medvedev
Medvedev reflected on his performance after the match. "I just felt like I had to be more consistent, and the more consistent one today would win," he said after the match. "I managed to just make a few less errors at important moments, serve even better, and it was a small margin but I managed to win and I'm really happy."
Tsitsipas sets up Alcaraz date in Miami
Tsitsipas improved his head-to-head record to 8-0 against De Minaur, including a pair of straight-sets wins this season. The win sees Tsitsipas set up a fourth-round showdown against Carlos Alcaraz. Notably, Tsitsipas has lost a fifth-set tie-break to Alcaraz in the 2021 US Open. Alcaraz progressed after sealing a crucial straight sets win over veteran Marin Cilic (6-4, 6-4).
Swiatek still undefeated at WTA 1000 events this season
Swiatek earned her 14th straight win after overcoming Gauff in an hour and 18 minutes. Swiatek will face Petra Kvitova in the quarters. Notably, Swiatek is still undefeated at WTA 1000 events this season. Swiatek can become the fourth woman to win Indian Wells and Miami in the same season after Stefanie Graf (1994, 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), and Victoria Azarenka (2016).
Wins for Kvitova, Collins and Osaka
Number 28 seed Kvitova prevailed over Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(5), 6-4. She is into her third Miami Open quarter-finals. However, she is yet to reach a semi-final at the event. 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins enjoyed a stunning 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ons Jabeur.
