Lionel Messi rescues Barcelona from defeat with a brace
There is no wonder why he has been Barcelona's main man for more than a decade now. Lionel Messi has been their savior many times, and stepped up to the occasion again yesterday when the Blaugrana were 0-2 down at home against Valencia. Messi scored a penalty followed by a beautiful curler which helped Barcelona draw the match. Here're further details.
Valencia's two early goals came from Barca mistakes
Valencia's opening goal came from Kevin Gameiro when Messi was dispossessed by Rodrigo Moreno whose through ball resulted in the goal. Though Barcelona tried to get even, Valencia held on to their ground firmly, not allowing them the required goal. However, Barca took another step back when a push by Sergi Roberto inside the penalty area led to Valencia scoring from a spot-kick.
Then La Pulga took matters into his hands
After Valencia were leading by two goals, a foul in their box saw Barca being awarded to a spot-kick, a decision which stuck despite VAR reviewing it. Messi made the best of the situation with a smooth spot-kick, and inched Barca closer to a comeback. Then in the 64th minute, assisted by a back-heel from Arturo Vidal, Messi curled in a goal from 20 yards.
Messi suffered a minor injury in the match
Messi is believed to have suffered a minor knock to his right thigh during the match, which was a matter of worry for Barcelona fans since they'll be facing Real Madrid soon in the semi-final of the Copa Del Rey. However, it was later confirmed by the club that the injury was minor and he will most likely feature in the match.
