Mayank Agarwal shows character with 81-run knock against NZ XI
The three-day practice game between New Zealand XI and India came to an end on Sunday. The match ended in a draw. India, who managed 263 on Day 1, saw New Zealand XI fold for just 235 next. On Day 3, Indian batsmen showed resistance (252/4). However, Mayank Agarwal showed character (81). Here's more on the same.
Mayank has had a horrific New Zealand tour
In the ongoing tour of New Zealand saw Mayank battle poor form. In five List A matches for India A, he got scores of 8, 32, 29, 37 and 24 against New Zealand XI and New Zealand A respectively. In the unofficial Test, he registered a pair. Mayank was drafted into the ODI side and managed 32, 3 and 1 in the series.
Mayank breaks barren run with 81-run knock
Mayank, who averages 67.04 after nine Test matches for Team India, will lead the batting upfront in the absence of partner Rohit Sharma. This game was crucial for Mayank and he didn't get the best of starts. In the first innings, he managed just one run. However, this was followed by a 99-ball 81. He smashed 10 fours and three sixes.
I want to take this confidence forward, says Mayank
Mayank said he wants to leave the poor run behind him. "It's been a little different playing here but I want to leave all that behind. Whatever has happened has happened. Yes, I got an 81 in the second innings of this practice game and I want to take this confidence forward into the Test match," said Mayank, who celebrates his birthday today.
Shaw could pip Gill in first Test starting XI
The main focus for Team India has been on who will open alongside Mayank. It was a chance for both Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill to cash in this practice game. Shaw managed 0 and 39. He shared a crucial 72-run stand with Mayank in the second innings. Gill missed the chance after managing 0 and 8. The management might prefer Shaw alongside Mayank.
