Fixing allegations have tarnished my best moments, says Maxwell
Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has expressed shock and disappointment after being indirectly accused of match-fixing by a sting conducted by media outlet Al Jazeera. As per the sting operation, it has been alleged some of the Aussie cricketers were involved in match-fixing in the Ranchi Test against India in 2017. Maxwell hasn't been directly named, but blurred video indicates him.
Maxwell left shocked and hurt by allegations
Maxwell had scored his maiden Test ton against India at Ranchi, and the all-rounder stated that one of the best memories of his life has been marred. As per SEN Radio, Maxwell said, "I was shocked. I was a bit hurt by it as well. To have these allegations about your involvement in a game where you've only got happy memories about it."
No truth in these allegations, claims Maxi
Maxwell denied any involvement in match-fixing, saying there's no truth in these indirect allegations. Maxi said, "To have the memories tarnished by these allegations was pretty devastating and obviously there's absolutely no truth to it whatsoever." He added that he would never have spoiled the hard work of getting into the Test side back then and called the allegation, absolutely ridiculous.
What did Al Jazeera's documentary claim?
In May, 2018 Al Jazeera's documentary 'Cricket's Match-Fixers' had claimed that three Test matches involving India in the past two years were fixed. The report claims that the Test match between India and Australia held in Ranchi on March 2017 was fixed. Besides that the 2016 Test against England in Chennai too was influenced by bookies.
Two Aussies influenced Ranchi Test: Report
The Ranchi Test was drawn after big tons by then Aussie skipper Steve Smith and a double ton by Cheteshwar Pujara. The documentary claimed that two visiting players were allegedly involved in influencing the game after manipulating a 10-over spell. This, in turn, helped the bookies make money. One player out of the duo has been, indirectly, identified as Maxwell.
