Matthew Hayden reminisces iconic Dravid-Laxman partnership from 2001 Kolkata Test
Matthew Hayden, the former Australian cricketer, has shared his memories of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman's historic partnership during the iconic 2001 Eden Gardens Test between India and Australia. This reminiscence came as he praised Dravid at the CEAT Cricket Awards 2024, where 'The Wall' was honored with a 'Lifetime Achievement' award. Hayden highlighted the remarkable resilience displayed by the Indian duo that left their Australian counterparts stunned. Notably, India upset the mighty Australians after receiving a follow-on in Kolkata.
Hayden recalls Australian team's confidence before historic partnership
Hayden vividly recalled the Australian team's confidence before Dravid and Laxman's record-breaking partnership. He said, "We walked onto the bus that day up in Kolkata and there was a fresh box of Cuban cigars. Michael Slater said we'll be smoking these at the end of the day and we'll have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy." This statement reflects their anticipation of an easy victory, which was later overturned by Dravid and Laxman's performance.
Hayden lauds Dravid's resilience and leadership
Hayden expressed admiration for Dravid's resilience, stating that the Australian team was left dumbfounded by his tenacity. He praised Dravid's ability to remain composed under pressure, and his commitment to the principles of cricket. "In a game which can tempt you to win at all costs, Rahul Dravid won on the principles of cricket and the principles of life," Hayden said.
Dravid-Laxman partnership turned the tables for India
India perished for 171 in response to Australia's first-innings score of 445. They were nearing a defeat at 232/4 in the second innings. However, the 376-run partnership between Dravid and Laxman changed the dynamics of Indian cricket. Laxman top-scored for India (281), while Dravid played an equally significant knock (180). India declared on 657/7 before bowling out the Aussies for 212. Notably, India are one of only three sides to have won a Test after receiving a follow-on.
Over 4,000 Test runs as a batting pair
Both Dravid and Laxman offered their priceless services to the Indian team during their playing days. They often bailed Team India out in Tests both at home and overseas. The duo scored 4,065 runs (86 innings) between them at an incredible average of 51.45.
