Martial's goal against Newcastle will cost Manchester United £7.2 million
Anthony Martial scored Manchester United's second goal en route to their comeback against Newcastle United as they won the match 3-2 via a late winner by Alexis Sanchez. However, Martial's 25th Premier League goal will end up leaving a dent of £7.2 million in United's account. They will have to pay the amount to Monaco, from where United acquired Martial in 2015.
What were the clauses in Martial's transfer deal?
United paid £36 million to Monaco while buying Martial, and the value could potentially go up to £57.6 million if certain clauses are met. Among these clauses, was the one where they had to pay £7.2 million if he scored 25 Premier League goals. Other clauses would get triggered if he makes eight more appearances for France and/or win the Ballon d'Or by 2019.
United should have used Martial more
It is hard to believe that given the talent Anthony Martial posses, he was not able to score 25 Premier League goals sooner. However, he has hardly been used by Manchester United. Such a talented footballer deserves much more playing time than what he gets. Martial has great speed, footwork, and shooting abilities and could become the next Hazard.
Martial will extend his United contract on one condition
Martial, signed by Ed Woodward, is a valued asset for United. Martial's contract expires next summer, with an option of an additional year. But, he has told the board that he will only sign an extension if Mourinho is replaced by then. Martial has hardly received playing time under Mourinho, and if the Portuguese manager stays, he will look for greener pastures elsewhere.
