Margaret Court will not attend this year's Australian Open
Tennis all time great, Margaret Court will not attend this year's Australian Open, after her views on homosexuality and gay marriage sparked an outrage. Margaret Court, who is Australia's greatest female tennis player, condemned homosexuality which, as expected, did not go well with several people. Margaret has decided to go crab fishing instead of attending the year's first Grand Slam.
Court's views on homosexuality
"I am disappointed that Qantas (Airlines) has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage. I believe in marriage as a union between a man and a woman as stated in the Bible.", Court said this publicly in 2017.
Margaret Court shuns Aussie Open
Margaret Court is a 11-time Australian Open winner and had 'Show Court One' renamed after her in 1998. She is the most successful tennis player of any gender in the tournament. Her comments against same-sex marriage caused outrage and there are talks that some players have refused to play in the stadium named after her.
Tennis legend advises against court boycott
Australian Open has a court named after her and the tennis great has said that it would reflect badly on the players if they decided to boycott the matches played on that particular court at Melbourne's tennis centre. "I think that is petty if they do that and it says what's in their heart," she said.
Most decorated Tennis player upset over uproar
Court, who is one of the most decorated players in history with 24 major titles to her name, said she was deeply offended by the backlash after people asked for the stadium to be renamed. She also denied being a homophobic and claimed to be a deeply religious person who followed the scriptures. Court is also a Christian Pastor.
