LSG's Marcus Stoinis sets records with his maiden IPL ton
Marcus Stoinis played the best knock of his Indian Premier League (IPL) career as Lucknow Super Giants beat Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 23. Stoinis' unbeaten 124(63) powered LSG to a six-wicket win as they chased down 211 in the IPL 2024 encounter. Stoinis, in this process, recorded the highest-ever individual score in IPL run-chases. Here's more.
Stoinis rescues LSG before going all out
LSG's run-chase had a forgettable start as opener Quinton de Kock departed without scoring. KL Rahul followed him after smashing 16. Stoinis, who came in at three, somehow kept LSG alive, though his partner Devdutt Padikkal struggled. Stoinis then went all out, with Nicholas Pooran's cameo supporting him. The former unleashed his onslaught when LSG required 47 off 18 balls.
Stoinis gives CSK a nightmare in death overs
From needing 47 from 18 balls, Stoinis took the equation down to 17 off the final over. He found boundaries off Mustafizur Rahman's first four deliveries, including a no-ball (1 six and 3 fours). Deepak Hooda (17* off 6 balls) too assisted Stoinis, who completed a 56-ball ton in the 18th over. The latter smashed a 63-ball 124* (13 fours and 6 sixes).
Stoinis enters record books
As mentioned, Stoinis now has the highest individual score in IPL run-chases. He broke the record of India's Paul Valthaty, who smashed an unbeaten 120 for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against CSK in 2011. The latter helped PBKS chase down 189 in Mohali. Notably, Stoinis and Valthaty are the only two player with 120 or more runs in this regard.
Other notable feats attained by Stoinis
Stoinis' 124* is the highest individual score for LSG in the IPL. He surpassed Rahul's 103* against Mumbai Indians in 2022. Stoinis is only behind de Kock, who slammed an unbeaten 140 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the same season. The Aussie batter also owns the highest individual IPL score against CSK. He went past Virender Sehwag's 122 for PBKS (IPL 2014 Qualifier 2).
Maiden IPL ton for Stoinis
At Chepauk, Stoinis raced to his maiden century in the IPL. He now has 1,732 runs from 90 IPL games at an average of 28.86. The tally includes a strike rate of 143.14. Stoinis also owns eight half-centuries in addition to a ton. Before joining LSG, he represented PBKS, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals in the cash-rich league.
