Manchester City's Akanji hits out at new Champions League format
Manchester City defender, Manuel Akanji, has expressed his concerns over the revised format of the UEFA Champions League. The new structure involves 36 teams competing in a single table and playing eight matches each compared to the traditional group stage with six games. This change comes as Manchester City prepare for their first match under this new system against Inter Milan at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Akanji highlights increased pressure on players
Akanji has voiced his concerns about the additional strain this new format will put on players during an already demanding season. "It's getting more complicated with the league. You play different teams, and then Inter don't have the same opponents as us. It's just got bigger, more games," he said. He also highlighted the lack of breaks in winter under this system, further intensifying the pressure on players.
Akanji hints at early retirement due to schedule
The Swiss international hinted at the possibility of retiring early due to the relentless schedule. "It's so tough, you don't just think about this season but also next season. When do we do holidays? There are no breaks in winter," he lamented. He further added, "If we are lucky we get two weeks and then we need to be back and into next season. There's no end to it."
Akanji eager to face Inter Milan despite concerns
Despite his reservations about the new Champions League format, Akanji is excited about facing Inter Milan again. "I'm looking forward to it, even with the new format," he stated. He also reminisced about their previous encounter in the final, saying it brings back good memories for them. This anticipation comes as a silver lining amid his expressed concerns over the revised tournament structure.
