Here's how much Manchester United have financially lost without UCL
Former England and European champions Manchester United are not featuring in the UEFA Champions League this season, and are instead playing the UEFA Europa League. Since they are still featuring in European action, they have their finances steady, but not enough owing to their lack of action in the UCL. Here are further details on their financial setbacks so far.
United lose big without UCL
As per an AFP report, United's broadcasting revenue has taken a fall by £10 million, owing to the lack of UCL. The figure is likely to increase in the second quarter of the season, as the season intensifies. The lack of UCL revenue is also likely to see their annual revenue falling to £560-580 million in 2020, compared to £627 million in June 2019.
Wage bill drops, while net debt takes a hike
The lack of UCL action has also taken a hit in the club's wage bill, as the bill has dropped to almost seven million in the opening quarter of the season. Meanwhile, the net debt of the club has also risen to £384.5 million following big-money signings, in the form of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, during the summer transfer window.
Executive vice-chairman sounds optimistic despite low revenue
Despite the low revenue in the opening half of the season, United's executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, was optimistic regarding the investments made. He also expressed his satisfaction over the same and the process in which it is bearing fruits. "Our ultimate goal is to win trophies by playing exciting football with a team that fuses graduates from our academy with world-class acquisitions," he said.
United have had a decent European season so far
As far as United's European season is concerned, it has been pretty decent in the Europa League. In the four matches played so far, United have won three and drew one, as they are on 10 points and on the top of their group table. The side has already qualified for the next round of the competition.
United's domestic trouble continues
As for their performance in the domestic circuit, it has been a troubled one this season. While they are currently played seventh in the Premier League table, they have won, lost and drew four each from 12 games. Meanwhile, they are going good in the Carabao (League) Cup for now, as they are scheduled to face Colchester in the quarters next month.
