Carabao Cup, Manchester United thump Barnsley at Old Trafford: Stats
Manchester United thumped Barnsley 7-0 in the third round of the 2024-25 Carabao Cup at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag's much changed side saw Marcus Rashford score the opener in the 16th minute. Antony, who made his first start this season, scored from the penalty spot (35'). Alejandro Garnacho scored a brace with Rashford adding a fifth. Christian Eriksen scored two goals thereafter.
Rashford hands Man United the opener
Manchester United didn't produce an ideal start with Barnsley having more of the ball and looking confident. Rashford handed his side a much needed boost after forcing a corner from a shot. Rashford then scored his first goal at Old Trafford since March after some brilliant work from Garnacho who made a perfect switch as the former took his chance with confidence.
Antony and Garnacho make it 3-0 before half-time
Rashford's goal saw Man United get a grip on the game as they looked sharp and comfortable. In the 34th minute, Antony was brought down by the Barnsley goalkeeper and he converted the penalty awarded. It was a well-struck penalty into the side netting from the Brazilian. Garnacho wasted a glorious chance thereafter but made amends in added minutes of the first half.
What happened in the 2nd half?
Garnacho made it 4-0 with Eriksen providing the assist. Garnacho who was offered a lot of space by the Barnsley defense. In the 58th minute, Barnsley gifted possession to the hosts just outside their own penalty area as the ball was played into Rashford, who fired a first-time finish. Antony then tested the Barnsley keeper before Garnacho missed a superb chance.
Fernandes and Eriksen combine for the last two goals
It was an easy 6th goal for the hosts as Bruno Fernandes' cross picked out Eriksen, who turned the ball past Slonina at the near post. In the 85th minute, Fernandes and Eriksen combined again for the 7th goal.
Rashford races to 134 goals for Man United
Man United academy graduate, Rashford, made his 408th appearance for the club in all competitions. Rashford scored his 133rd and 134th goal for the club, including three this season which have come in successive matches (also versus Southampton in Premier League).
Garnacho shows his class for the Red Devils
Garnacho has been in fine form at the start of the ongoing 2024-25 season. He scored for ten Hag's men in the FA Community Shield. He came on as a substitute against the Saints and scored his side's 3rd goal. Garnacho has raced to 19 goals in 92 appearances. Garnacho made two assists in the match. He owns 12 assists, including three this season.
Eriksen races to 5 goals and 14 assists
Eriksen marked his 75th appearance for Man United with a brace and an assist. He owns five goals for the Red Devils in addition to making 14 assists.
