England clinch a thriller
Majestic Ben Stokes smashes eighth career Test hundred
Ben Stokes (135*) played with a lot of character and resilience. He smashed a superb century and went mayhem post that. This was his eighth career Test century and a second in 2019. He is the second-highest run-scorer in Ashes 2019. He also amassed his second Ashes 2019 ton as well.
Root notches a host of feats, goes past Botham
Root led England's charge in the second innings to help the side breathe after being in a position of bother. The English skipper (77) slammed his 43rd career Test fifty. He also notched his 11th career Ashes fifty as well. The right-handed batsman went past 1,500 Ashes runs after his effort in the second innings (1,545). He went past legend Ian Botham (1,486).
Archer shines, Broad races to 458 career Test scalps
Jofra Archer picked up eight wickets in the Headingley Test. The Englishman took 6/45 in the first innings. This was Archer's best career Test figures. He has raced to 13 wickets in two career Test matches. Stuart Broad (4 scalps) now has 109 Ashes wickets. He also has the most Test wickets at Headingley (46). The veteran also raced to 458 career Test wickets.
Warner joins an unique club in Ashes
David Warner claimed four catches in the first innings. He equaled the record for most catches taken in an innings by a non-wicket-keeper in Ashes history. Eleven other players have taken four catches in an Ashes innings. Warner slammed 61 in the first innings. This was his 30th career Test fifty and a 12th in Ashes. He also registered his second Ashes duck later.
Labuschagne smashes third straight Ashes fifty
Marnus Labuschagne smashed 74 and 80 at Headingley. This was his third Ashes fifty and a third successive one as well. Labuschagne had scored 59 at Lord's earlier. He also registered his fourth career Test fifty.
Aussie pacers Hazlewood and Cummins excel
Josh Hazlewood was terrific in the first innings and took 5/30. This was his second five-wicket haul in Ashes. The senior pacer took four wickets in the second innings and raced to 49 career Ashes wickets. He now has 176 career Test scalps. Pat Cummins continued his fine run. He now has career 40 Ashes wickets and leads the charts (17) in Ashes 2019.
England script some unwanted records
England's score of 67/10 in the first innings is their fourth-lowest team total on home soil. Their lowest is 52 which was recorded in 1948. It is followed by 53 and 62 the side recorded in the same Test against Australia at Lord's in 1888. This was England's lowest Ashes score at Headingley. Their previous lowest total here was 87 in 1909.
A look at some other interesting records
This was the third occasion where England were bowled out for fewer than 90 in 2019. The Three Lions were bowled out for 77 against West Indies in Bridgetown in January. They were bowled out for 85 against Ireland at Lord's in July. England beat Australia for the first time after eight Test matches.
