Former Barcelona boss Enrique named Spain's new head coach
Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has been appointed the new coach of Spain. The Spanish Football Federation made this announcement on Monday. Enrique has signed a two-year deal. It comes after interim manager Hierro resigned post a disastrous World Cup campaign. Notably, Spain had sacked Lopetegui, a couple of days before the tournament and Hierro had taken over as coach on a temporary basis.
Hierro was named interim manager after Lopetegui's sacking
Fernando Hierro was named the interim coach and managed them at the World Cup, where Spain were knocked out of the round of 16. Hierro stepped down from his post on Sunday. The Spanish Football Federation did not speak to any other candidate and directly decided to appoint Enrique as the new boss. His first game in charge will be against England in September.
Enrique is one of the high profile managers in football
Enrique has vast experience as a coach. He has managed the likes of Roma and Celta Vigo apart from Barcelona, where he won two La Ligas, three Copa del Rey titles and one Champions League. Enrique has been without a job since he parted ways with Barcelona two seasons ago. However, he has kept his fighting spirit alive by competing in the Ironman Triathlon.
Enrique's fiery personality could be hard to deal with
A fiery personality, Enrique, was close to being sacked by Barcelona in 2015 when he had a high profile fallout with superstar Lionel Messi. He even had frequent spats with the media during his 3-year tenure at Camp Nou. With Diego Costa and Sergio Ramos in the Spanish side, it will be interesting to see how he will manage these short-tempered stars.
