What lies ahead for New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson?
New Zealand cricket star Lockie Ferguson recently signed a $360,000 platinum contract with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. This move marks his return to Sydney after a seven-year hiatus, following his previous stint with Sutherland District Cricket Club. Like many of his contemporaries, Ferguson rejected the NZ central contract earlier this year. In a conversation with Fox Sports, the Kiwi pacer opened up on his future in international cricket.
Ferguson's commitment to New Zealand and BBL
Ferguson has expressed his desire to continue playing for New Zealand in future ICC tournaments, including the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. "I'm still very committed to play for the Black Caps in and around the franchise competitions," he stated. He also voiced support for a potential expansion of the BBL, suggesting that it would be beneficial for both Australian and New Zealand cricket if Kiwi players could participate more extensively.
International stars prioritizing T20 leagues
The influx of T20 leagues is diminishing the significance of international cricket. The international stars are prioritizing T20 leagues owing to lucrative offers and contracts. Ferguson is the latest entrant on this growing list, which also includes Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Adam Milne, and Finn Allen. Smaller cricket boards like New Zealand's are unable to entice their stars at the moment.
Ferguson's impressive performance and future plans
Ferguson last featured in the 2024 T20 World Cup for New Zealand. He took seven wickets from four matches. The right-arm pacer also achieved the rare feat of conceding zero runs in a four-over spell during New Zealand's match against Papua New Guinea in the Caribbean. Despite rejecting a central contract with New Zealand Cricket, Ferguson remains committed to representing his country at ICC tournaments while also participating in franchise competitions like the BBL and Indian Premier League.
