Champions League: Liverpool stun City with 3-0 win at Anfield
Pep Guardiola's high flying Manchester City were handed a timely reminder that they are far from invincible. They received a 3-0 thumping in the hands of Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Three goals in the opening 30 minutes from the Reds were enough to shatter Manchester City's hopes of winning the treble. Here's our match report.
Salah, Ox and Mane's strikes give Liverpool the lead
Liverpool's in-form player Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 12th minute and then Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doubled the lead with a sumptuous strike. Sadio Mane put the game to bed, as he headed Liverpool's third leaving the fans at Anfield wanting for more. City's only effort came through Gabriel Jesus. However, his goal was ruled offside.
Liverpool only team to beat City twice this season
Guardiola was aware of Liverpool's attacking prowess but he got his tactics wrong this time. Liverpool were the only Premier League team that had beaten them and he couldn't help but watch his side succumb to another shocking loss. However, he believes everything is not over yet with the return leg of the fixture to be played at the Etihad Stadium on April 11.
Liverpool suffer Salah injury scare
Despite the glorious victory, Liverpool fans were left biting their fingernails. Mohamed Salah limped off the field shortly after halftime with a groin injury. Liverpool will be hoping that his injury is not serious.
Liverpool are the leading goal scorers in the Champions League
Liverpool have been prolific in front of the goal and have scored 31 goals in this season's Champions League, four more than any other side in the competition. The Reds have now remain unbeaten in 15 European games in Anfield, with 10 wins and 5 draws. Manchester City failed to score for the fourth time in 49 matches this season.
City's team bus attacked before fixture
The high octane fixture had its fair share of controversies after Manchester City's team bus was attacked outside Anfield before the encounter. No players or staff members were injured in the incident but this raises serious concerns about the security measures provided. Liverpool have apologized for the incident and have condemned the behaviour of their fans.
