UEFA Champions League: Key takeaways from first set of quarters
2017-18 UEFA Champions League finalists Liverpool took control of their quarter-finals tie after gaining a significant 2-0 win against FC Porto at Anfield. Meanwhile, Premier League champions Manchester City suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against rivals Tottenham Hotspur. This sets for an important second leg clash at the Etihad. Here are the key takeaways from the clashes.
Liverpool's mid-field players continue to lay the foundation
Liverpool's mid-field players have been productive this season and no matter who comes in, the team seems to thrive. On this occasion it was Naby Keita, who scored the opener after five minutes. Jordan Henderson has been superb of late and he played a major role in the second goal. Liverpool have depth and quality in mid-field and that's massive improvement from last season.
FC Porto will rue missed chances
FC Porto will be ruing the missed chances. A goal would have been a significant aspect going into the second leg. The side definitely needs to work on the finishing and be more agile in the final third. Striker Moussa Marega missed some glorious chances and at this level one expects the player to convert them. Porto need a response at home next.
Spurs deserved victory after being strong at home
Spurs will be pumped up after taking advantage of Manchester City, who weren't at their best. Son Heung-min's late goal was well deserved for the side at their new home stadium. Son was terrific in particular and showed his willingness to take responsibility. Credit also goes to Hugo Lloris for saving a Sergio Aguero penalty. It was a strong all-round show.
City have work to do in second leg
City have an advantage over Spurs with striker Harry Kane limping off crutches after a serious ankle injury during the match. His absence will boost City. Pep Guardiola got his team selection wrong this time around and mistakes on the pitch cost them. City need to show urgency and attacking brilliance to succeed. They also cannot risk conceding at home.
