Ligue 1 2020-21: How's the title race shaping up?
The Ligue 1 2020-21 season has been tight unlike the last few campaigns. Four teams are in race for the league honor in France's top flight. Interestingly, all four teams are separated by one point each at the moment. Lille lead the Ligue 1 standings and are followed by Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, and Lyon. Here we decode the title race.
Can Lille keep their heads high?
Three-time champions Lille top the show in Ligue 1. After 33 matches, Lille have collected 20 wins, 10 draws, and three losses. They have forwarded 54 goals, besides conceding just 20 (fewest). However, Lille have won just two of their last five games (W2 D2 L1). Notably, Lille's next league match is against fourth-placed Lyon. A win could hand them significant advantage.
PSG still the favorites to land another crown
PSG have dominated Ligue 1 of late and are the favorites to bag another crown. They have won the title in 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20. The nine-time winners are aiming to lift a fourth successive crown. PSG are second, having collected 69 points from 33 games. They have scored the most goals (74), besides conceding the second-fewest goals (25).
Monaco have turned things around
2016-17 Ligue 1 winners Monaco have impressed this season after being in the wilderness in recent campaigns. They have churned out positive results and find themselves in the third position. The eight-time league winners have collected 68 points from 33 games. They have scored 70 goals, besides conceding 38. Monaco are the in-form side, winning four of their last five games (W4 D1).
Lyon are in the mix as well
Lyon have slipped to fourth but are one point below Monaco and three behind leaders Lille. They are in the mix for the title and need to be strong from here on. A showdown against Lille next is massive for Lyon. The 2019-20 Champions League semi-finalists have 67 points from 33 games. They are unbeaten in their last three league games.
