Jon Lewis departs as England women's cricket head coach
What's the story
Jon Lewis has left his position as the head coach of England Women's cricket team, following a 16-0 defeat in the Women's Ashes series against Australia.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the news on Friday, after reviewing their recent performance.
His exit also follows the team's group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup last year.
Here's more.
Coach's statement
Lewis expresses pride in team's achievements
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women's head coach," said Lewis in a statement.
"Unfortunately, I won't be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team while winning and growing the women's game in this country."
Despite the recent setbacks, Lewis emphasized his pride in their achievements.
He said, "I have worked tirelessly with this group of young players to develop their skills and understanding of modern-day white-ball cricket."
ECB's recognition
Clare Connor appreciates Lewis's contributions
Clare Connor, the ECB Managing Director for England Women and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, thanked Lewis.
She noted his contribution at a difficult time for cricketers amid the pandemic.
Under his leadership, "the team held off Australia to draw a thrilling 2023 Women's Ashes - attracting record crowds with an entertaining brand of cricket," Connor said.
She also praised their bilateral cricket success, including eight consecutive ODI series wins from 2022-2024.
Future plans
ECB ready for upcoming challenges
Connor confirmed that despite the recent disappointments in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup and Women's Ashes in Australia, they are ready to face upcoming challenges.
"We must be ready for an exciting summer of international cricket and to challenge for two World Cups over the next 15 months," she stated.
The ECB plans to appoint a successor soon, as England prepares for its home series against West Indies starting from May.
