The Championship is a national second tier of English league football was established in 1892-93. It was known as the Football League Second Division up till 1992. In 1992 when the First Division clubs became the Premier League, the second tier became known as the First Division. In 2004 it was re-branded as the Football League Championship before becoming the EFL Championship in 2016.
Leicester City have won 8 titles
Leicester City's 3-0 win over Preston on Monday night, ensured them their 8th second-tier honor (1924-25, 1936-37, 1953-54, 1956-57, 1970-71, 1979-80, 2013-14, 2023-24). The Foxes had gained promotion back in 2014 and had since then remained in the Premier League until last season. They have now sealed progression in their first attempt. Notably, Leicester won their maiden First Division/Premier League title in 2015-16.
Manchester City have bagged seven honors
Premier League serial winners Manchester City have won the second-tier title on seven occasions (1898-99, 1902-03, 1909-10, 1927-28, 1946-47, 1965-66, 2001-02). Notably, Manchester City have pocketed nine titles in the top-flight as well, including seven in the Premier League since the First Division was rebranded. Notably, Man City finished runners-up in English second-tier on four occasions and claimed third-place once, earning promotion.
Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland have five titles
The likes of Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland have won five English second-tier titles. Norwich have won in 1971-72, 1985-86, 2003-04, 2018-19 and 2020-21 respectively. Sheffield Wednesday were a top-notch in the yesteryears, winning in 1899-1900, 1925-26, 1951-52, 1955-56 and 1958-59. Sunderland have done in on five occasions as well (1975-76, 1995-96, 1998-99, 2004-05, 2006-07).

The likes of Birmingham City, Burnley, Derby County, Leeds United, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and Wolves have claimed the second-tier title on four occasions. Burnley won the 2022-23 EFL Championship title.
