'Proud of everyone': Laxman praises NCA team for handling players
VVS Laxman, the former Indian batter and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) Head of Cricket, has praised his team's efforts in managing injuries and rehabilitation of top Indian cricketers. The praise came during an interaction at the inauguration of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence near Bengaluru. Despite previous criticism aimed at NCA for alleged mismanagement, Laxman expressed pride in his team's work since taking charge in December 2021.
Laxman highlights the pressure of injury management
Laxman highlighted how high-pressure the job is, especially when it comes to handling injuries. He said, "I can't comment on what has happened in the past, but I can say with a lot of conviction that I am very, very proud of everyone." He also gave a shoutout to the Sports Science & Medicine (SSM) team for their vital role in this process.
Laxman commends players' dedication to recovery protocols
Laxman also showered praise on players like Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Prasidh Krishna for their commitment during recovery. He stressed how crucial it is to be patient and stick to the protocols. "Having patience and following the protocols is very, very critical," he said.
Laxman acknowledges mental challenges in recovery process
Laxman recognized the mental hurdles players face while recovering, especially when they're stuck indoors. He mentioned that his team often plays the role of mental health conditioners for players itching to get back on the field. "They have conversations at various stages of their rehab," he said, emphasizing how crucial it is to have good communication and understanding between the team and the players.
Laxman lauds BCCI for handling Pant's recovery post-accident
Laxman also praised the BCCI for their role in managing Pant's recovery following a car crash in December 2022. Despite initial predictions of a two-year recovery period, Pant made a successful comeback to competitive cricket in March this year following a 14-month rehabilitation at NCA. "The most remarkable thing, and here, again, I would like to compliment the BCCI," Laxman said.
