Tom Latham faces severe challenge to lift Kiwi Test team
Tom Latham was earlier appointed as the new captain of New Zealand's Test cricket team, following Tim Southee's decision to step down. The change in leadership comes after a disappointing 2-0 series loss to Sri Lanka. Southee, who was struggling with his form during the series, chose to relinquish his role as leader of the team. Latham has previously captained the side nine times and was seen as the natural successor. He faces a severe challenge to lift the side.
Latham's journey to captaincy amid team's struggles
The transition of leadership to Latham was not marked by celebration, but rather a sense of desolation as the team returned from South Asia. Despite his exhaustion from the journey, Latham expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged Southee's contributions. "I obviously feel very privileged to be given the opportunity and (with) luck we have plenty of leaders in the group," he told Stuff in an interview.
Latham's career and NZ's upcoming challenges
Latham, a consistent opener with an average of 39.41 from 82 Tests, has been a mainstay in New Zealand's batting lineup for the past decade. His tenure coincides with a successful period for New Zealand cricket under former captains Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson. However, the team is currently facing challenges after four consecutive Test losses and player retirements. The next hurdle is an upcoming three-match series against India starting on October 16 in Bengaluru.
Latham's outlook on upcoming India tour
Despite his consistent performance, Latham has not scored a century in nearly two years, a fact that may weigh on him as he leads his team against India. The Indian team is currently enjoying a record streak of 18 consecutive home Test series victories. "It's obviously a great challenge that's ahead and I guess it's something to look forward to," said Latham about the upcoming series against India.
NZ were tamed by the Lankans
New Zealand were trounced 2-0 by Sri Lanka in the just concluded Test series in Galle. The Lankans won the first Test by 63 runs before taming the Kiwis by an innings and 154 runs in the 2nd Test.
India thrashed Bangladesh at home
On the other hand, Team India dented Bengladesh 2-0 at home. Rohit Sharma-led India humbled the Tigers by 280 runs in Chennai in the 1st Test. Thereafter, an ultra-aggressive Indian side beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets.
