ICC Test Rankings: Kohli rises to 5th position
Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored his 50th international century against Sri Lanka in the first Test in Kolkata on Monday which has helped him move up a spot to fifth in the latest ICC Test batsman rankings. Kohli edged past Australia's left-handed opener David Warner to clinch the 5th spot in the rankings. Let us know more about the latest ICC rankings.
Who leads the ICC Test batsman rankings?
Australian captain Steven Smith continues to sit atop the ICC Test batsman rankings with 936 points. India's Cheteshwar Pujara retained his status as the highest ranked Indian batsman at number 4 with 866 points to his name. Opener KL Rahul is the other Indian alongside Pujara and Kohli in the top 10, retaining his eight position spot with 757 points.
Other Indian players who moved up the rankings
Left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan has gained two spots to leap onto the 28th position. Man of the match for his 8 wickets in Kolkata, Bhuvneshwar Kumar propelled eight places to his career best ranking of 29 in the ICC Test Bowler rankings. Pacer Mohammed Shami's six-wicket haul has earned him a jump of one place to 18th position.
Players who dropped down in the rankings
Bowling just two overs in the first Test against Sri Lanka proved costly for Ravindra Jadeja, as he fell down the rankings to the third spot in the ICC Test Bowler rankings. He lost 20 points. Right-hand batsman Ajinkya Rahane suffered a four place drop and finds himself on the 14th spot in the rankings.
How are ICC Test team rankings calculated?
Each team is awarded one point for winning a Test match and 0.5 points if they claim a draw. An extra point is awarded for a series victory. The calculation is made for a minimum period of 36 months to a maximum period of 48 months. No extra points are given for away victories. However for beating tougher opposition extra points are awarded.
India continue to dominate Test cricket
Virat Kohli's men continue to be the top team in Test cricket with 125 ranking points. South Africans are placed second in the list while England occupy the third spot in the charts. England have a chance to stay put on the third spot if they claim a 5-0 victory in the Ashes which commences on 23rd of November.
