La Liga's decision to play matches in USA criticized
La Liga, recently, decided to play some of the matches in the USA and this has brought the body under heavy criticism. The Spanish Football Association (AFE) had a meeting, where it decided that it will not be playing the matches outside of Spain. It is even willing to go towards strike action if the need arises. Here are more details about this issue.
Betis vs Barcelona to be held in America?
The home match of Real Betis against Barcelona might be relocated to Florida. This prevents their 50,000 season ticket holders from seeing the match, which they've already paid for. Further, this nullifies the only advantage they had over Barcelona in the match- home crowd at the Benito Villamarin. It has been suggested that Betis would benefit financially, but no details have been disclosed.
Who all attended the AFE meeting?
All the captains of La Liga's teams were in attendance in the meeting with David Aganzo, the President of AFE. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and defender Nacho Hernandez represented their club. Barcelona was represented by Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto. Atletico Madrid players Koke and Juanfran also attended this crucial meeting. Collectively, the captains have said no to playing in the USA.
La Liga president admits money is the motivating factor
La Liga President Javier Tebas has admitted that the decision has been made to advertise the league and increase its popularity overseas. The body has signed a 15-year deal with Relevant Sports to play the matches in America. The Executive Chairman of Relevant Sports, Charlie Stillitano commented that they require the top 5-6 teams to play in America, suggesting that others were not important.
