La Liga could restart in July with no fans: Broadcaster
The coronavirus pandemic has crippled the world with each passing day and Spain has faced the brunt with over 8,000 deaths. All sport around the world was either suspended or canceled including La Liga. However, the head of a major broadcaster has said, La Liga could commence in July without any fans. Here's more on the same.
I expect football to return in July, says
All organized soccer in Spain has been on hold since March 10 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jaume Roures, CEO of Spanish multimedia group Mediapro, predicted that things could resume behind closed doors in three months' time. "I expect football to return in July, certainly without supporters, but first of all there would have to be a pre-season," Roures told radio station Cadena Cope.
If another player tested positive, the season could end
Earlier, players from Valencia, Espanyol and Alaves had tested positive for the virus. Roures said if another player was to contract the disease then the 2019-20 season would have to be cancelled. "If a player tested positive, for example on July 20, we'd have to throw in the towel and say goodbye to the season," Roures added.
The priority is to complete the season: RFEF
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) claimed earlier that the major focus remains on ending the 2019-20 season if at all possible. "The priority is to complete the season," RFEF president Luis Rubiales had said at a press conference. "We can't just relegate teams now. "There are hundreds of teams waiting to complete the season. When the country recovers, that will be the moment."
11 matches left to be played in La Liga 2019-20
11 matches are still to be played in La Liga. Barcelona lead Real Madrid by two points at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, the battle to avoid relegation is also finely balanced.
