Eden Gardens to rename stand after cricket legend Jhulan Goswami
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has decided to rename a stand at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium, after legendary women's cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The Block B gallery will be named after this former Indian women's team captain, making her the third person to be honored at the venue. The inauguration will take place on January 22 during the men's T20I match against England.
Stand redesign to reflect Goswami's legacy
The Block B stand, which is next to the dressing room and clubhouse, will be redesigned in honor of Goswami's illustrious career. Nicknamed the 'Chakdah Express,' Goswami is a native of Chakdaha in West Bengal's Nadia district. Her rise from humble beginnings to international fame has inspired many. The CAB had been planning this tribute since 2022 but was waiting for the Defence Ministry's permission as the land belongs to them.
Goswami joins elite group at Eden Gardens
The required clearance for the tribute was given on Tuesday, clearing the way for the initiative. With this honor, Goswami joins an elite club of cricketers including Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, who also have stands named after them at Eden Gardens. A CAB official said on Monday: "Jhulan is a legend, and it was only fitting that a stand be named in her honor."
Goswami's remarkable career and contributions to Indian cricket
In her two-decade-long international career, Goswami took 355 wickets across formats for India before retiring in 2022. She also mentored in the IPL, adding to Indian cricket with her experience. CAB president Snehasish Ganguly was delighted with the decision and said: "Jhulan has been an icon of the game and it's our tribute to our incredible achievements for Bengal and Indian cricket."
