#ThatWas2018: Records scripted by Virat Kohli in 2018
Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli smashed his way into the record books time and time again in 2018. The 30-year-old defined himself in both Tests and ODIs this year. He started with a bang in the series against South Africa and never looked back from there on. Here is a look at records Kohli scripted this year.
Highest runs scorer in both Tests and ODIs
Kohli ended 2018 as the leading runs scorer in both Test and ODI cricket. He amassed 1,322 runs in Tests this year at an average of 55.08. Kohli smashed the most centuries in Tests in 2018 (5). He also hit the most fours in the format (144). The Indian captain amassed 1,202 runs in ODIs. He scored the most number of hundreds (6).
Kohli registered his 34th international ton as skipper
Kohli registered his 34th international ton as skipper to go past former South Africa legend Graeme Smith (33). He achieved the feat in the second Test against Australia in Perth. Kohli requires seven more tons to equal former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting (41). Kohli brought up his 12th ton against Australia across formats. He equalled the likes of Brian Lara and Sir Jack Hobbs.
Kohli amassed 25th career Test ton
The century in Perth against Australia was Kohli's 25th career Test ton. With the milestone, the Indian skipper became only the first Asian batsman to score a hundred in each South Africa, England and Australia in the same year in Tests. Kohli took the least innings (86) to get to 5,000 Test runs, while batting at number four position. He broke Jacques Kallis' record.
Kohli goes past Dravid in this special feat
The 30-year-old Kohli overtook legend Rahul Dravid on the list of top scorers for India in Test matches away from home in any calendar year. Dravid had gone on to amass 1,137 runs from 11 matches in 2002. Kohli managed 1,138 runs from 11 away matches this year. He went past Dravid, after scoring 82 in the first innings of the ongoing third Test.
Kohli smashed many records in ODIs this year
Kohli became the fastest to 1,000 runs in ODIs in this calendar year. He took just 11 innings. He became the fifth Indian to reach 10,000-plus career runs in ODIs and only the 13th player in history of the game. Kohli took the least number of innings (205) to score 10,000 runs in ODIs. He eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar's record, who had taken 259 innings.
Some outstanding ODI records by Kohli in 2018
Kohli became only the second player ever to score three consecutive ODI tons against West Indies, the first being Babar Azam. However, he was also the first to do so against two opponents, having preyed on Lanka before.
