IPL: KKR reportedly in talks with Sangakkara to replace Gambhir
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly in discussions with Kumar Sangakkara, to fill the mentor role left vacant by Gautam Gambhir. This development follows Gambhir's appointment as the head coach of Team India. Under his guidance, KKR, led by Shreyas Iyer, clinched the Indian Premier League (IPL) title earlier this year. As per The Telegraph, Sangakkara can now succeed the former Indian opener.
Sangakkara's IPL journey and potential move to KKR
Sangakkara, arguably Sri Lanka's finest-ever batter, has been serving as the director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals since 2021. However, sources have revealed that he is set to part ways with the franchise. This departure coincides with Rahul Dravid's anticipated return to the Royals for the 2025 season, along with potential addition of ex-India batting coach Vikram Rathour.
KKR's existing coaching staff and Sangakkara's potential role
Currently, KKR's coaching staff includes Chandrakant Pandit as the head coach and Bharat Arun as the bowling coach. Additionally, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach Ryan 10 Doeschate have joined Gambhir in Team India. The franchise is reportedly in advanced discussions with Sangakkara for the mentor role, a decision that is expected to be finalized soon.
BCCI's upcoming announcement and its impact on IPL franchises
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the terms of retention for the franchises this month. This announcement will lay the groundwork for the IPL 2025 mega auction, potentially influencing KKR's final decision regarding Sangakkara's appointment as mentor.
