Points aren't of equal measure in Test Championship: Williamson
New Zealand cricket team skipper Kane Williamson isn't happy regarding the points system in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship. In the Test Championship, a series has 120 points on offer, irrespective of the number of Test matches. With the points system being a bit bizarre, Williamson had his views on the same. Here are the details.
Explaining the value of the points system
With 120 points on offer in a series, the value diminishes given the number of games. The value for each Test match win in the upcoming two-match series against Team India is 60 points per game. However if it's a five-match, the value of a Test match win is reduced to 24. Similarly, it's 40 for three and 30 for four four games.
'Test Championship is a step in the right direction'
Williamson feels the ICC World Test Championship is a step in the right direction as it brings value. "It's an interesting one. I guess there's an element to it that isn't fair. But I guess there is an effort in bringing context to Test cricket which wasn't there. So I mean the World Test Championship is a step in the right direction."
Points distribution system needs to have a relook, feels Williamson
"It is a step in the right direction but there are so many parts to it that some teams playing five, some teams playing two, the difference in countries, there is just heaps of different parts to it that don't quite make the points of equal measure," said the Kiwi skipper ahead of the first Test against India, starting Friday.
Ross Taylor had earlier voiced a similar opinion
"There are probably still a few teething issues to go with the points system but it has brought context to cricket which is probably what ICC were after. Is it the ideal situation at the moment? Probably not. But it's a lot better now than it was before when we had nothing," New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor had said last week.
