Lesser-known records of Kane Williamson in T20I cricket
Kane Williamson will lead New Zealand in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, which will get underway on June 1. West Indies and USA will co-host the gala event. Williamson is well versed with the drill of the T20I format as he also owns an impressive record. He led NZ to knock-outs in the last three T20 WCs. Let's decode his unique T20I records.
Highest score for captain in a WC knock-out game
Williamson holds the record of slamming the highest score by a captain in a knock-out game of the T20 WC. The New Zealand skipper was brilliant against Australia in the final of the 2021 event as he scored 85 off just 48 balls. The Kiwis, however, lost that duel by eight wickets. England's Jos Buttler (80*) trails Williamson on this list.
Only captain with this feat
Williamson has led NZ in three T20 WCs so far, in 2016, 2021, and 2022. The Kiwis reached the semi-final stage in each of the three competitions. While they were knocked out in semis in 2016 and 2022, the 2021 edition saw them finish as runners-up. He is the only captain to lead his side to three successive T20 WC semi-finals.
Second-most runs as captain in T20 WC history
Williamson has tallied 517 runs in 17 T20 WC games while leading the Kiwis. His average in this regard reads 34.46 with his strike rate being 34.46. The tally includes a couple of fifties. Only India's MS Dhoni (529) owns more T20 WC runs as a designated captain. Williamson can go past the Indian talisman in the upcoming event.
Third-most runs as captain in T20Is
Williamson is among the only three players to have hammered over 2,000 T20I runs as captain. While he owns 2125 runs at 34.27 in this regard, Babar Azam (2,320) and Aaron Finch (2,236) are the other players on this elite list. No other NZ captain has even 800 runs in this regard. Brendon McCullum trails Williamson with 735 runs.
