WTC has enhanced value of Test matches: Kane Williamson
Former New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, has expressed his belief that the World Test Championship (WTC) adds significant value to each Test match. His comments come as the Black Caps prepare for six Tests in India and Sri Lanka over the next two months. Five of these matches will contribute to their standing in the WTC 2023-25, where they currently hold third place with a point percentage of 50%.
NZ's performance in WTC
The Black Caps have a strong track record in the WTC, having won the inaugural edition of the championship in 2021. This victory marked their second senior men's ICC title. As they gear up for their upcoming matches, Williamson emphasized that each game carries high value due to its potential impact on their WTC standing. Meanwhile, New Zealand are third in the ongoing 2023-35 WTC standings with a PCT of 50% (W3, L3).
Williamson's views on WTC's impact on Test cricket
Williamson likened the WTC to tournament sport, noting that despite its longer duration, each game holds significant value. He stated, "The context around Test cricket with the Test Championship is really key and it's brought out a lot of really exciting games." He also expressed excitement about their upcoming six-Test matches which will play a crucial role in their WTC journey.
NZ's upcoming tours and past performances
Following their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Greater Noida, India, New Zealand will tour Sri Lanka for a two-Test series. They will then return to India for a three-match series against the hosts. Despite their past struggles in India with only two Test wins so far, Williamson remains optimistic about the upcoming tours. He acknowledged these as demanding prospects but believes that they will provide valuable experience for his team.
