    Sri Lanka batter Kamindu Mendis has floored England with a crucial century on Day 4 of the first Test in Manchester on Saturday.

    Mendis resumed Day 4 on an unbeaten 56 with the visitors on 204/6 in their 2nd innings.

    Alongside Dinesh Chandimal, the southpaw ensured that the Lankans didn't lose any wicket in the first session (291/6).

    SL collapsed thereafter (326/10).

    Mendis makes history for Lanka on English soil

    As per Cricbuzz, Mendis became the first Sri Lankan batter to score a hundred in England while batting at No. 7 or below. The previous highest was 94 runs by Duleep Mendis at Lord's in 1984.

    Mendis' brilliant start in Test cricket continues

    Mendis, who was unbeaten on 101 from 175 balls at Lunch, ended up with 113. He has smashed 15 fours and a six.

    The promising batter has surpassed 500 runs in Test cricket (553) with his average being 90-plus.

    Notably, his scores in Test cricket read: 61, 102, 164, 92*, 9, 12, and 113.

    In addition to three tons, he has clobbered two fifties.

    Mendis shines for the Lankans

    A fantastic morning session was in store for Sri Lanka as the partnership between Chandimal and Mendis has stretched Sri Lanka's lead to 169.

    The two added 87 runs in the session and an unbeaten tally of 101 overall.

    Earlier on Day 3, Mendis and Angelo Mathews shone with a fifty-plus stand.

    The two offered a lot of resistance and fought valiantly for SL.

    Mathews scored an important 65 for Sri Lanka on Friday. He faced 145 balls. This was the veteran batter's 42nd fifty in Tests. He owns 7,673 runs under his belt.
