Should Andre Russell bat higher up the order for KKR?
Kolkata Knight Riders have found a new batting weapon in the form of Andre Russell. He has been their guardian angel on several occasions, as his hard-hitting skills have helped KKR get over the line. Notably, he comes quite down the order, yet manages to turnaround the games. Several pundits feel that pushing him up the order might help KKR. We decode this scenario.
Russell won't mind batting at number four
Russell agreed that in crunch situations, batting up the order could help him. He added he had no apprehensions batting even at number four. "When you look at the makeup of our team, I would not mind going to bat at number 4," Russell said.
Lower middle order suits his style better
Russell mostly comes to bat at number fifth or sixth position. Unless, there is a batting collapse, he only has to face less than 30 deliveries. While playing such fewer deliveries don't do justice to his talent, it certainly allows Russell to play his natural hard-hitting game. Number four position is usually given to someone who can anchor the innings.
If situation arises, it's something we'll think of, says Kallis
KKR consultant Jacques Kallis said, "It certainly hadn't been one of our plans, but if the situation arises then it's something we'll think of. It's a matter of what the team needs in such a situation and what the captain and management come up with."
Russell batting up the order can ease pressure on top-order
Analyzing the situation, although batting at four would not allow Russell to go after the bowlers right away, it could certainly ease the pressure of the top-order batsmen. If Russell decides to bat at number four, top-order batsmen do not have to worry about a slow start. They can play their natural cricket, since they would have Russell's services early.
Russell and KKR eye top-four finish
As of now, KKR are struggling to win matches, while their bowling hasn't quite performed this term. Thus, KKR would look to improve in that area when they lock horns with Rajasthan Royals tomorrow. Meanwhile, Russell would aim to continue doing what he does best, help KKR win to earn a top-four finish in the ongoing IPL.
