Jos Buttler steps down as England's white-ball captain: Details here
What's the story
Jos Buttler has resigned as England's white-ball captain after the team's dismal run in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.
The decision was announced before England's last league match against South Africa.
"It's the right decision for me, it's the right decision for the team and hopefully somebody else who can come in and work closely alongside Baz [Brendon McCullum] to take the team back to where it needs to be," Buttler said at a press conference on Friday (February 28).
Performance impact
Buttler's decision influenced by Champions Trophy elimination
However, Buttler admitted that his decision was affected by England's early Champions Trophy exit, losing to Australia and Afghanistan back-to-back.
The team was already out of form before the tournament, having lost the 0-3 series to India a week ago.
"Yeah, I think it's quite clear that this tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover of some tournaments before," he said.
Legacy
Buttler reflects on his tenure as England's white-ball captain
Despite the recent setbacks, Buttler was proud of his tenure as England's white-ball captain.
He had taken over from Eoin Morgan in 2022 and guided the team to the T20 World Cup victory in Australia that year.
However, England's performance dipped thereafter with early exits from the 2023 ODI World Cup and their T20 title defense.
"I think overriding emotions are still sadness and disappointment, but I'm sure in time that will pass," he said.
Coaching impact
England's performance under McCullum and Buttler's partnership
The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brendon McCullum as the coach of the white-ball teams in 2025, along with his Test match duties.
However, the change didn't bring immediate results as England lost nine out of 10 white-ball games since the start of the year.
"I'm sad about that and obviously with Brendan coming in only recently, I was really excited to work closely alongside him," Buttler said.
England
England suffer successive losses in Champions Trophy
Australia made history after beating England in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on February 22.
The Men in Yellow chased down 352, now the highest successful run-chase in Champions Trophy history. England managed 351/8 earlier.
In their second Group B clash, Afghanistan stunned England on February 26.
The Afghans successfully defended 325, with Joe Root's ton going in vain. Their win was powered by a fifer from Azmatullah Omarzai.

England under downward spiral
As mentioned, England have lost nine of their last 10 limited-overs contests. Their dismal run includes four T20I defeats (to India) and five losses in ODIs (three to India and one each to Australia and Afghanistan). Moreover, England have now suffered six successive ODI defeats, their most since September 2009, as per Cricbuzz.
