Jeffrey Vandersay becomes second wrist-spinner with ODI six-fer against India
Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay powered Sri Lanka to a 32-run victory against India in the 2nd ODI in Colombo. The Lankans successfully defended 240 after bowling out the top-ranked ODI side for 208. Vandersay, who came in as injured Wanindu Hasaranga's replacement, decimated India with a six-fer. He became the second-ever wrist-spinner with an ODI six-fer against India. Notably, Vandersay took India's first six wickets.
India succumb to Vandersay
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got India off to a flier in the run-chase, having added 97 runs. However, Vandersay sent back both the Indian openers before the 20th over. The wrist-spinner then got rid of Shivam Dube (0), Virat Kohli (14), Shreyas Iyer (7), and KL Rahul (0) to trigger India's batting collapse. Vandersay finished with 6/33 in 10 overs.
Vandersay joins Akila Dananjaya
As per ESPNcricinfo, Vandersay became the second-ever wrist-spinner to record a six-fer against India in ODIs. He went past Pakistan's Mushtaq Ahmed (5/36). Vandersay's compatriot Akila Dananjaya, who bowls off-spin and leg-spin, took 6/54 against India in Pallekele in 2017. Vandersay bagged the third-best bowling figures for a spinner in ODIs against India, only behind Muthiah Muralidaran (7/30) and Ajantha Mendis (6/13).
First-ever spinner with this feat
As per Cricbuzz, Vandersay has become the first spinner to take each of the first six wickets falling in opposition's innings. Charith Asalanka, the Lankan skipper, dismissed Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Mohammed Siraj thereafter.
Vandersay races past 30 wickets
As mentioned, Vandersay was added to the Lankan XI in place of the experienced Hasaranga, who injured his hamstring. Vandersay, who made his ODI debut in 2015, finally made waves with his historic spell. He now has 33 wickets from 23 matches at an average of 26.72 in the format. His economy rate reads 5.41.
