Unadkat joins Sussex in County Championship after Duleep Trophy snub
Jaydev Unadkat, a seasoned fast bowler in India's domestic red-ball cricket scene, will turn up for Sussex in the County Championship. Unadkat's decision comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) overlooked him for the impending Duleep Trophy. Despite his consistent performance at home, Unadkat's opportunities have been limited when it comes to Test selection. Notaby, Unadkat led Saurashtra to the 2019/20 Ranji Trophy title.
Unadkat expresses joy over returning to Sussex
Unadkat expressed his delight at rejoining Sussex, referring to Hove as his "second home." He praised the team's performance this season and voiced his optimism about their prospects in the second half. "The team's been doing fantastic this season and, hopefully, in the second leg of the season, we're going to pull it through and get back in division one," Unadkat said in a video shared by Sussex on social media.
Unadkat's impressive performance in his first season
In his debut season with Sussex (2023), Unadkat made a significant impact by taking 11 wickets in just four matches. This contribution helped the team secure third place in Division 2. The left-arm seamer's beft performance came as he recorded 6/94 in the second innings on his home debut, against Leicestershire. Unadkat will once again play for the same side that featured Indian Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara in the previous seasons.
Unadkat's contributions to Sussex lauded
Unadkat is set to return to Sussex for their final five championship matches of the season. His contributions on and off the field were highly praised, with a statement from the club noting that he "lived up to the expectation that not only would he show his class on the field, but he would also be a fantastic person and be part of what we are all trying to achieve."
Over 400 wickets in red-ball cricket
Seasoned campaigner Unadkat is known for his variations with the white ball, especially the slower one. He has over 220 wickets under his belt. The left-arm seamer also has more than 400 wickets in First-Class cricket. He has been an under-rated bowler in red-ball cricket. Unadkat has also played four Tests and eight ODIs for Team India.
