Champions Trophy: NCA status will determine Jasprit Bumrah's participation
What's the story
India's premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reached the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for a set of medical scans.
The tests are part of an assessment to determine his fitness ahead of the much-awaited 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
As per reports, Bumrah reached Bengaluru on Sunday evening and will be closely monitored by the BCCI medical team during his NCA stay.
The Indian pacer has been recovering from a back issue following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Selection implications
Bumrah's fitness assessment to guide Champions Trophy selection
Bumrah is likely to stay at the NCA for two-three days while undergoing these tests.
The results of his assessment will be communicated to the Ajit Agarkar-led men's senior selection committee.
This information will be critical in deciding if Bumrah is fit enough to play in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
If unfit, this could potentially open a spot for another player on the team.
Agarkar's statement
Fitness status to be revealed soon
Agarkar had earlier said Bumrah was advised a five-week rest after the Border-Gavaskar series. He added that they are waiting for updates on his fitness.
"We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team," Agarkar said.
This indicates that a clear update on Bumrah's condition and possible participation in the Champions Trophy is imminent.
Squad announcement
BCCI to finalize squad for Champions Trophy soon
Meanwhile, the BCCI is also working on finalizing their 15-man squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The final list has to be submitted to the ICC by February 11.
If Bumrah fails to make the cut due to his fitness issues, Harshit Rana could be included in the squad.
This will depend on the results of Bumrah's ongoing medical assessment at NCA.
Team preparation
Team Indian preps for Champions Trophy
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team has already begun its preparations for the Champions Trophy with a brief camp in Nagpur.
This, ahead of their ODI series against England, which will be a practice run for the team.
Post the three-match ODI series, the team will leave for the UAE (on February 15) to participate in the Champions Trophy tournament.
India will play their matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan, the host country.
