Jason Roy pulls out of IPL 2022: Here's why
England opener Jason Roy has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. It is understood that he does not want to stay in the tournament bubble for an extended period. Gujarat Titans had signed the England batter for his base price of Rs. 2 crore at the mega auction. They are yet to name a replacement for Roy. Here are further details.
Why does this story matter?
Roy recently featured in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022, which was also played in a bio-secure bubble. He will have to spend another two months in the bubble if he takes part in the IPL. In that case, he would have to be away from his family. Notably, his second child was born in January this year.
Roy has pulled out of IPL earlier as well
This is not the first time Roy has withdrawn from the IPL after finding a team at the auction. In 2020, he was picked by Delhi Capitals for his base price of Rs. 1.5 crore. However, he had pulled out for personal reasons.
A look at Roy's IPL career
Roy has represented Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi Capitals (2018), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021) in the IPL. The England batter has racked up 329 runs from 13 matches at an average of 29.90 in the tournament. He carries a strike rate of 129.01 and owns two half-centuries. Roy went unsold in the 2021 auction, but SRH later drafted him as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh.
Roy shone at the PSL
Roy stood out in his recent stint for Quetta Gladiators at the PSL. He was their leading run-scorer even though the Gladiators finished fifth. Roy amassed 303 runs at a remarkable average of 50.50 in the tournament. He had a staggering strike rate of 170.22 (41 fours and 10 sixes). The 31-year-old slammed two fifties and a century.
