Jacob Bethell becomes youngest Englishman to score ODI fifty: Stats
What's the story
England batter Jacob Bethell has entered the record books with a meticulous knock against India in the 1st ODI at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur.
Bethell was one of England's two half-centurions as the visitors perished for 248 against India.
He has become the youngest Englishman to score a half-century in India. At 21 years and 106 days, Bethell broke Joe Root's record from 2013, as per Cricbuzz.
Record breaker
Bethell surpasses Root's record
Root had set the previous record, at 22 years and 24 days, when he scored a half-century against India in Mohali in 2013.
However, Bethell smashed this milestone by nearly a year, etching his name into cricket history.
This was Bethell's second ODI fifty, with the first coming against the West Indies in North Sound, where he scored an impressive 55 runs off just 57 balls.
Match saver
Bethell helps England evade top-collapse
In the match against India, Bethell proved instrumental in reviving England's innings.
He walked in when England were reeling at 111/4 and went on to stitch a 59-run partnership with captain Jos Buttler.
This strategic play ensured the team remained stable during a difficult phase. He scored a 64-ball 51 before falling to Ravindra Jadeja.
However, a concerted bowling effort helped India bounce back.
Rising star
Bethell also has this record in T20Is
Notably, Bethell is also the youngest Englishman to score a half-century in T20I cricket.
He attained the feat by scoring an unbeaten 58 off 36 balls against the West Indies in Bridgetown last year.
His talent also caught the eye of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as RCB bought him for ₹2.60 crore at the mega auction.
