Salman Nizar's heroics guide Kerala to Ranji Trophy semis
What's the story
Kerala have made it to the Ranji Trophy semi-final for only the second time in their history, courtesy a stellar performance by Salman Nizar.
The thrilling quarter-final match against Jammu & Kashmir was decided in the final half-hour of play.
Despite needing just four wickets, J&K couldn't prevent Kerala from batting out the day and securing a draw, due to their one-run lead.
J&K scored 280 as Kerala responding with 281. J&K scored 399/9d. Kerala got to the target (295/6).
Match decider
Nizar and Azharuddeen's partnership seals the deal
While Nizar remained unbeaten with 44 runs off 162 balls, his partner Mohammed Azharuddeen scored a quickfire 67 off 118 balls.
Their seventh-wicket partnership lasted for an impressive 42.4 overs, effectively neutralizing J&K's attack on the final day.
This strategic play ensured Kerala's progression to the semi-final where they will face Gujarat on February 17.
Game changer
Nizar's 1st-innings century sets stage for victory
Nizar's first innings performance was key in setting up Kerala's victory.
His century (112 runs) took Kerala from a precarious position to a lead which proved decisive in the end.
He deftly handled the lower order, partnering with Basil Thampi to add 81 runs and snatch the lead after J&K had left Kerala struggling at 200/9 after their score of 280.
Team effort
Saxena's contribution and final day strategy
Jalaj Saxena's 67-run contribution was equally significant in Kerala's fightback.
He revived a faltering innings from 11/3 as J&K seamer Auqib Nabi made the ball move on a greenish Pune deck.
On the final day, Kerala started at 100/2 needing 299 runs for victory.
However, their strategy wasn't scoring runs but time consumption, with Sachin Baby and Akshay Chandran adding only 58 runs in their 43-over partnership.
Comeback attempt
J&K's comeback and Dogra's century
J&K staged a comeback after lunch with their spinners accounting for key wickets.
However, Nizar and Azharuddeen showed resilience, stonewalling J&K's attack for most of the last three hours to secure a draw.
Despite an initial lapse in their bowling strategy, J&K scored 399/9 in their second innings largely due to captain Paras Dogra's century.
It was his first ton after a long dry spell without any half-centuries.
